Team V Waterford.
Our captain obviously still not fit enough to make the bench.

Last year's team bar 2. Kinda strange.

Darragh Fitzgibbon??? Zero hurling done.
Luke Meade again? Where?

I'll give this new management the benefit of the doubt and say they're trying to finish the match stronger than start it

My last post has the Waterford team on it if you click on it. Not sure why it's not visible

By the way, I said it during the KK game, I don't trust Damien Cahalane anywhere near the FB line

I agree. Great athlete but limited hurling. I've said it before also that I feel our keeper is our main problem.

Hope this year proves me wrong

Plenty on the bench, once again we are selecting players who have been at best consistent at this level for a long time at this stage…..the more things change the more they stay the same

This management has a fairly established pattern of making changes before throw in so let’s wait and see. One selection in particular appears to be based on reputation rather than recent form for Cork so hopefully that person has been tearing it up in training. The big questions for me (aside from the obvious worries about the full back line) are the same as they have been for the last ten years with Cork - whether we can win enough dirty ball around the middle third (the team seems to be picked to flood this area) and whether our forwards can withstand a bit of bullying and can do a bit of it themselves when the Waterford half backs have the ball. Waterford are likely to start faster than us as the game last week will stand to them. We can’t afford to lose a player if we are chasing the game so one or two of our lads will need to be careful as Waterford will target them.

Looking forward to the game sunday now, really is a case of going into the unknown with new management, new players and guys returning from injury having little or no league time, i hope we've worked a bit more on tactics and working the ball through the lines as think pat ryan can be a bit too keen on direct ball which turns into long ball that pur forwards can't win
Can't understand for the life of me how luke meade keeps making the team, offers absolutely nothing to the midfield battle just drops in behind half back line looking for soft ball and guys think he contributes then cos he's seen on the ball.... worrying lack of pace in that forward line with no kingston, robbie or jack o connor, disappointed not to see daire o leary not even on the bench, is he really that far back in the pecking order, good to see mellerick back, would love to see him midfield with roche as is a good ruckman and hard worker, can see him swapping with downey tho depending on where waterford play kiely, o donoghue a huge loss when it comes to marking hutchinson

Sort of the team I would have expected, apart from Padraig Power, whom I expected to start. But he's only had a few games, so, perhaps, management wants to ease him into championship. I don't know exactly how Ryan sees his players, but I strongly suspect that he has a different role for some of them than many supporters have come to expect.

Munster is cut-throat, especially after the result in the Gaelic Grounds tonight.

Cork have got to hit the ground running tomorrow, simple as. The big question is whether we're coming into this undercooked and Waterford are in the game zone from last week. This is a game Cork must be winning - going to Ennis & Limerick needing the points is not what we would be wanting.

There's a fair bit of deja vu about the starting team if in fact it does line out like that. Luke Meade certainly wont play in the corner. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a change or two announced before throw -in.

By the way...where's Jack O'Connor & Alan Cads?

Cads on the extended panel - Looking at our subs, I wonder why though - IMO, he should be there (but what do I know!!!) - I was very disappointed with the team announcement - Same old, same old - Fellas here since 2013 - I have great time for Pat Ryan and to be fair he doesn't have a full deck of cards to play with (I reckon he's down 6 starters, including Coleman & Connolly), so it's going to be a hard afternoon I fear - Waterford by 4 (Hope I'm wrong) - Rebels Abú

Don't like the noises coming from the Cork crowd. Loads of oohs and aahs at our flicks and tricks.
Not far off the olés.

Solid win. Nice work rate and attitude. Next week will be a sterner test of that resolve but today's a fine start.

Time will tell whether today's non contest by Waterford will be a good thing. Cork look mentally tuned in so should be fresh enough for Tipp on Saturday. Today's was like a warm up. Waterford.... Jesus Christ

Great to get the win like that and get an opportunity to give lads a run and other lads a rest before next week. Brian Roche had some championship debut in fairness to him. It’s a shame in some ways that the changes seemed to lead to us losing our bite a bit and we didn’t pile on the scoring difference a bit more.

I really liked the work rate and the bit of cynicism we don’t always see from Cork teams. The Tipp forwards will be licking their lips when they see some of the Waterford goal chances in the second half though. I’m sure Pat Ryan will be delighted to have a few things to keep them grounded this week anyway.

It’s shaping up to be a real nail biter of a Munster Championship.

Good days work but sterner tests to come.
Waterford were piss poor. I don't thick they've won a hurling championship game at any level this year. Davy looked deflated after the game.

For Cork, big stretch coming up now

Nitpicking now but one thing that has struck me a few times this year is that Joyce, who is a really important player for us defensively, gives away cheap possession more than a player of his quality should. It’s almost as if every time he wins a ball that he barely had any right to win he gets a rush of blood to the head and does something that gives it back or his next strike isn’t pure. Teams will target that, just as they’ll target a lack of height in some of our other defenders.

Next week will tell us a lot more about how we are going I think. But if you’d offered me todays performance and result last night I’d have bitten your hand off. Well done to everyone involved. In our desperation to see Cork on top again we take all the effort for granted too much.

No reason why Cork shouldn't improve after today, provising they get the recuperation right.

I was optimistic before today and, though Tipp are a step up on Waterford, I would be hoping for another good performance next week.

2hands I agree about Joyce, superb player and a leader but his distribution is his weakest part and yesterday especially in the second half it happened a lot, other then that however he is a born centre back.
Overall a good performance especially considering they were coming in cold, I was watching both warm ups and Waterford were going hard in theirs while cork looked almost relaxed.
Defence as a unit was solid enough, midfield very good, forwards were a mixed bag, hoggy looks very sharp and harnedy the same- some warriors both.
Dalton definitely adds something different in the half forward line and worth a start, after that I would think there is serious competition coming from o’flynn on any of Barrett or Meade who were both a bit off yesterday.
Lehane worked hard and did well in the first half before completely going out of it in the second
Tipp will be a different animal and we’ll see how we are on Saturday
