He did look pretty shook up walking off after a heavy challenge from Aidan O Shea.
We badly need his power running against Roscommon but it surely means Sherlock starts?
I'm inclined to agree with this too.
For some reason, similar to Shane Kingston with the hurlers, Sherlock always seems to make more of an impact coming off the bench...as you say when the game gets a bit stretched and legs & concentration levels are waning.
Roscommon are a dour, tight, well-structured team, who won't be giving much away early on. If this game is going to be a war of attrition early on it makes sense to have a sharpshooter of Sherlock's class ready to come on for the final 20.

While O Rourke is the likely replacement I believe it will be a costly error. If it was O Driscoll injured, O Rourke could do his job to some extent but Deane is crucial to us tactically and it's more the role he performs that needs to be matched rather than the individual. I'd prefer to see Paul Walsh partner Ian Maguire and O Callaghan fulfill Deane's role. This must be a horses for courses decision rather than who's next in line.

I'd agree with that but it looks like Walsh isn't rated highly by this management. I can't remember him
getting game time since he was red carded v Limerick in June last year. Another crap decision by Jerome Henry of Mayo as Maher was the aggressor and Paul was just trying to fend him off. In any case he hasn't been seen since AFAIK despite warming the bench a lot. He's capable of scoring though.

The Cork Senior Football team to play Roscommon in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Preliminary Quarter Final has been announced
1 Micheál Aodh Martin (Nemo Rangers)
2 Maurice Shanley (Clonakilty)
3 Rory Maguire (Castlehaven)
4 Tommy Walsh (Kanturk)
5 Luke Fahy (Ballincollig)
6 Daniel O’Mahony (Knocknagree)
7 Matty Taylor (Mallow)
8 Colm O’Callaghan (Éire Óg)
9 Ian Maguire (St Finbarr’s)
10 Brian O’Driscoll (Tadhg Mac Carthaigh)
11 Ruairí Deane (Bantry Blues)
12 Killian O’Hanlon (Kilshannig)
13 Sean Powter (Douglas)
14 Brian Hurley (Castlehaven) Captain
15 Eoghan Mc Sweeney (Knocknagree)
16 Patrick Doyle (Knocknagree)
17 Cian Kiely (Ballincollig)
18 Tom Clancy (Clonakilty)
19 Kevin O’Donovan (Nemo Rangers)
20 Paul Walsh (Kanturk)
21 Chris Óg Jones (Uibh Laoire)
22 Conor Corbett (Clyda Rovers)
23 John O’Rourke (Carbery Rangers)
24 Mark Cronin (Nemo Rangers)
25 Steven Sherlock (St Finbarr’s)
26 Fionn Herlihy (Dohenys)
This is the team that started last week but Kevin O Donovan was named at No 4 and Chris Og was named at No 15.
I suspect that the named team won't start tomorrow either as if Deane was really concussed it seems there's a 7 day exclusion.
I expect K O D to start and possibly Chris Og instead of Hurley. All the expert pundits say Sherlock should be unleashed on
a tiring defence for about 30 minutes. I'm not in that camp.

BTW...........For those of you old enough to remember the 1973 team who ended the football famine of 28 years, are being honoured ( paraded) at HT tomorrow. No doubt they will get soup and sambos afterwards like they did on the 25th anniversary. That was the day that Finny Mac covered himself with 'gory' by forgetting Bernie O Neill's name.

There are a few egg heads in that forum and the IGNORE button is best used.
This old world is changing a lot and some of these changes accepted as 'normal' now are hard for old people to accept.

Re: Cork senior football team 2022
If Deane isn’t fit to start (and I hope they don’t risk it if there was any doubt about him being concussed), then I think they’ll ask McSweeney to go to the half forward line and bring Sherlock in from the start. The key to this will be to have players who can score against a massed defence and Sherlock is a better bet to score from distance than Chris Og.

Re: Cork senior football team 2022
I've been on proc for years, but just today I was finally motivated to look elsewhere and I found this. Yeer discussion is massively more adult and informative here.
Looking forward to tomorrow. I've been at all the championship matches and the home league matches, and this is a fit and organized team of clued-in players. Roscommon is a tough one, but Cork will show up tomorrow too the same way, and we hope (for them most of all) that it'll be enough.

Tomorrow is such a massive opportunity for this group to build up trust and support amongst a much wider part of the cork gaa community. I think there will be a fine support tomorrow and the team deserve it as the one thing not lacking is their attitude and determination.
I really hope for this group they get a result.
Roscommon are a serious proposition, good manager, tactically astute, top forwards and a really physical approach, hopefully we will be ready in those areas ourselves, another day out would be great

Re: Cork senior football team 2022
This has looked like a group playing for each other all year. The interview Ian Maguire gave the last day was a really good sign and you could tell from the body language of the players that the mood in the camp seems to be good. Hopefully they aren’t just satisfied to leave it at that and they approach tomorrow with the same ravenous hunger to prove themselves to the rest of the world that they showed on Sunday. It’s a tough ask and a short turn around given the heat, but I’m hopeful they will put in a strong performance and that the crowd will get behind them. It’s a game that will be decided by a few small things either way and let’s hope those small things fall Cork’s way again. We rode our luck at times last week so let’s hope there’s a bit more left in the bottle.

Brilliant. But look at the date of posting- 12 years ago. It first came out the year of the win - before the win!

They did, and no thanks to Cawley. They won in spite of him.

9 wides and 2 dropped short v 2 wides for the Rossies.
This team is improving but once again Cawley had his usual number of bizarre decisions. Yes we got a few soft frees but how Smith didn't get a black card for a rugby tackle on Deane defies credibility.

Re: Cork senior football team 2022
Such an important win in so many ways. This team certainly doesn’t lack guts and fight anyway and when you have those you are some of the way there.
The lack of experience really showed in the last ten minutes with the panicked efforts to play keep ball in the corner when the ball should have been moved to the other end of the pitch and the turnover by Matty before the last free which could have been disastrous. All we needed to do at that point was hold onto the ball and run the clock down, like Roscommon did for most of the first half.
The other big factor today was home advantage. That missed free by Mayo could be a real turning point. I’m not convinced the free for fouling the ball which led to the winning score would have been given if the crowd hadn’t bayed for it. And I’m not convinced the last free would have been turned over if the crowd weren’t on the linesman’s back. Maybe it made no difference, but I suspect it did.
I’m also not convinced Deane was fit to start, but that’s for another day. It will be almost impossible to produce a big performance three weeks in a row against a team that has been waiting in the wings and resting up, but the lads won’t go out because of lack of effort anyway. And we’re definitely learning as we go along. The fisted point at the end might have been kicked last weekend.
Well done to everyone involved. The pints and spirits will taste a lot sweeter tonight (unless you’re a Rossie).

Re: Cork senior football team 2022
It's been a long time since Cork footballers had 9 different scorers in one game.
9 wides also with Sherlock contributing 4 of those. Half forwards had 1 each and sub Chris óg had 2. I think he was fouled for that goal miss so no blame to any of them for having a shot.
Roscommon were either shot shy or closed down by Cork defenders as they only had 1 wide from open play. Their other miss was by keeper from a long range free. He did score a 45.
I have some sympathy for Enda Smith as that was a sad way to end his match. Tommy did instigate the retaliation but didn't deserve the poke in the head by Smith.
Dublin, Armagh or Derry next. This team couldn't care less who the opposition is. They will still continue to play their own game and another 1-14 in Croke Park may well get us into a sem-final.
Great to see Tom Clancy make a valuable contribution to this win and will probably start next week.

Re: Cork senior football team 2022
Really impressive dig out today by all concerned, have to give credit to Martin, another excellent day bar one blip and his kickouts were excellent with a bit more variety.
We have a good bit of depth in defence with fellas who want to defend and are happy to be as physical as you want. I think our structure with huge work rate and physicality around the middle makes us hard to beat…..difficult first half by attitude excellent all through and a sideline willing to make hard calls.
Hopefully fahys injury isn’t too serious because he is a great bit of stuff, big test going again next weekend, hopefully at least the Sunday for an extra days rest at least, however a brilliant feeling to see a cork team play with the traditional spirit and desire, I’m sure the 73 team were happy looking on

Just watching it back. Cawley didn't and should of called in the first half, a black card or a yellow, gave nothing and a red card. Second half, a stone wall penalty for Chris Og...
Christ, imagine if this was a do or die game!!!! Oh wait!!!
